![]() ![]() Follow the main road up and over the hill to the North Parking Lot. Don’t miss the photo-worthy West Point Lighthouse, built in 1881. On the 2.8-mile Discovery Park Loop Trail, the park lives up to its name, revealing something new at every turn, from bluffs and beaches to forests and meadows. GETTING THERE: The main entrance to the park is on West Government Way (Gilman Avenue West) in Magnolia. As Seattle’s largest parkall 534 acres of it Discovery Park is known for its dramatically diverse landscape. Well marked from this point on, the trail returns you to your starting point in roughly 3 miles. The beach option is a great walk in and of itself, though the Loop Trail continues south. Turn right and follow the trail across another road and down toward the beach. About half a mile from the parking lot, you’ll hit the well-marked intersection with the Loop Trail. Head west from the North Parking Lot, and stay left on the road (closed to cars) as it curves south and up the bluff. The popular Loop Trail is about 3½ miles in all, including a 1-mile trip down to the beach. ROUTE: There are almost 12 miles of trails within the park. With miles of trails that wind through fields, forest, and beaches, and views of Puget Sound, the Olympic Peninsula, and even Mount Rainier, Discovery Park is an easily accessible, easily enjoyed, well-signposted, year-round escape for anyone who wants a breath of fresh air. WHY IT’S GREAT: The biggest park within Seattle’s city limits, Discovery Park is a 534-acre nature-packed haven just on the western edge of the urban jungle.
